What is a cascade?
Cascade control gives homeowners a smarter, more flexible heating system by linking multiple heat pumps together under one controller. Whether you’re running two units for a large family home or several for a bigger property, the system automatically shares the workload. This not only boosts reliability, ensuring heating continues even if one unit needs servicing, but also improves efficiency by matching output to demand.
The system is fully adaptable to different needs. It can combine air source and ground source heat pumps for the best balance of performance across the seasons, automatically switching to the most cost-effective source depending on outdoor conditions. It can also prioritise hot water or heating depending on your household’s needs, making sure comfort is never compromised.
For homeowners, cascades provide the reassurance of plenty of hot water and consistent heating, even during peak demand. Because the system is expandable and compatible with both older and newer units, you can upgrade gradually without replacing everything at once. With built-in smart controls and easy expandability, cascade systems offer a future-proof, reliable, and efficient solution for larger or more demanding homes.
NIBE heat pumps offer some of the most advanced cascading capability available.

Cascade in an Historic Scottish Estate
Penninghame Estate, with roots tracing back to the early 1700s, was once the seat of the Earl of Galloway and spanned a vast 10,000 acres with over 40 tenanted farms. Today, the estate stands as a symbol of heritage and continuity and now, sustainability.
In May 2025, the owners of the estate opted to install two NIBE F1345 ground source heat pumps in a cascade setup to modernise the heating system.
