Job Vacancy: Senior Technician Apprenticeship | Building Services Engineering

The Role

We are currently looking for an apprentice to join our team, focusing on building services engineering. Building services engineering senior technicians use their technical knowledge to deliver, or address problems with, building services systems that are to be designed, manufactured, installed, managed, or maintained, within a building. The main types of building services systems are mechanical (heating, ventilation, and cooling), electrical (power, lighting) and public health (water services and drainage).

What will you do?

Over the course of this apprenticeship successful applicants will carry out placements within the pre sales design, technical aftersales, field service engineering and product management departments at NIBE Energy Systems.

Pre-sales Design 

  • Propose building services engineering solutions to well-defined technical problems. This will include the suitable specification of heat pump systems.
  • Preparation of design documentation including ductwork schematics, P&ID docking schematics, heat loss reports, wiring schematics and domestic plumbing and heating schematics.
  • Use of analytical and engineer analysis software including: NIBE DIM in-house heat pump modelling tool, Autodesk REVIT and AutoCAD engineering packages.
  • Introduction to Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) and communication protocols common to heat pumps, including API and Modbus TCP/RTU.

Technical Aftersales

  • Provide after-sales technical support to installers carrying out the design and installation of heat pump systems.
  • Use analytical engineering processes and methods to help diagnose and troubleshoot alarms on active heat pump systems.
  • Work alongside the technical department and logistics managers to understand after-sales processesand co-ordination. This will include liaising with the after-sales team at the Swedish head office to track re-occurring product faults, carrying out duties associated with warranty claims and management of spare parts.

Field Service Engineering

Use a range of practical and workshop skills whilst assisting on-site field service engineering teams.

  • Plan, undertake and analyse the works required to successfully diagnose and repair heat pump systems.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety & welfare requirements are met at all times. Candidates will apply safe systems of work throughout their apprenticeship. This will include training and familiarisation with the construction design and management regulation.
  • Preparation of Risk Assessment Method Statement (RAMS) documentation
  • Plan and co-ordinate site-support activities for first fix, second fix and commissioning engineer visits for live specification projects.

Product Management

  • Work alongside the Product Manager to understand the relevant policies and legislation that impact the management, design, and installation of heat pump products in the UK.
  • Contribute to work that analyses the environmental impact of heat pump products, including F-Gas refrigeration regulations and Embodied Carbon Environmental Product Declaration assessments.
  • Familiarisation with the most common British and European testing standards for heat pumps, hot water and mechanical ventilation devices.
  • Plan and implement a heat pump monitoring field trial to analyse in-use performance and efficiency, showcasing skills learnt through the 4 placements whilst with the company. Candidates will have the option to use this opportunity to prepare for their apprenticeship End Point Assessment (EPA)

What will you bring?

  • Relevant level 3 (advanced) apprenticeship, A-Levels, BTEC or NVQ.
  • GCSE English and Mathematics (minimum grade 4)

What will you achieve?

Throughout this 24–36-month apprenticeship NIBE will be supporting successful applicants in achieving;

  • A level 4 Higher National Certificate (HNC) as a Building Service Engineer Senior Technician.
  • The required competencies to apply for Engineering Technician (EngTech) level 4 professional recognition with the Engineering council and the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE)
  • Career development, with opportunities to transfer into a full-time position within the NIBE Energy Systems technical department after successful completion of the HNC.
  • If successful in the above, there will be opportunities for further training and education to progress towards achieving Incorporated Engineer professional recognition (IEng).
