Air Source Heat Pump Case Study
Pear Tree Mews, Derbyshire

Pear Tree Mews, Derbyshire

A development of nine high specification, individual homes in a rural conservation area has proven to be the perfect setting for a range of NIBE air source heat pumps. Pear Tree Mews in the centre of the village of Breedon on the Hill, Derbyshire was a small development constructed around the former yard, farm and farm buildings known as The Limes and was a sympathetic development in keeping with the aesthetics of the village.

Part of the planning consent granted by North West Leicestershire District Council was for the developers, Alexander Hastings Developments Ltd , to support a policy for renewable energy and carbon reduction and it was this condition that led to the sourcing and commissioning of nine air source heat pumps, one for each individual property, to manage hot water and heating supply to the homes.

Solution

“After some research, it became apparent that NIBE products fulfilled all our requirements in terms of product robustness, innovative design and a proven track record of working well in installations across Northern Europe which experienced similar weather conditions to rural Derbyshire,” commented James Ottewell Alexander Bruce. “NIBE had paid great attention to detail both in their design and manufacture process and also by having a network of designated installers who were professionally qualified to carry out the installation process.”

The project required the installation of 7 x F2040 8kW and 2 x F2040 12kW ASHP (tailored to property size) on the new build development which were supplemented by SMO 20 intelligent control systems and Megacoil cylinders to meet domestic hot water needs and give a customised heating system.

The advanced air source heat pumps system works by harnessing natural energy stored in the outdoor air. Using a highly efficient vapour compression cycle the additional energy generated is used to supply hot water and heating for each of the new homes.

The system then feeds this renewable energy back to a heat exchanger, to provide efficient, reliable heating and hot water.

Results

The systems were designed and installed by NIBE VIP Installer, Indigo Renewable Energies Ltd whose experience in this field allowed for a seamless system installation right from site survey through to commissioning and ongoing maintenance support.

The NIBE F2040 air source heat pump fitted at Pear Tree Mews can operate at temperatures as low as -20°C and is particularly suitable for domestic applications. It is available in 8kw, 12kw and 16kw all of which are attributed with an A *** energy rating.

Testimonial

James explains; “It was important to give our homeowners an energy efficient way of managing their heating and hot water but also support the planning requirements by providing a renewable energy source at this development. An air source heat pump was the perfect solution delivering low running costs and long term sustainability to allow our homeowners to manage their carbon footprints whilst enjoying the benefits that a system like this can bring.”
