Normanton Lodge, Alfreton

Normanton Lodge is a care home for elderly people in the Mansfield area. It is run by My Care, a family-owned business that is dedicated to providing high quality care for the elderly, with 13 homes across the East Midlands. A fine period building, Normanton Lodge was opened in 1971 and has been extended  over the years. Most recently, this has included a 46-bedroom brick-built extension to the care home, which required its own dedicated heating system.

Solution

My Care is committed to utilising renewable energy, wherever possible in its care homes, so heat pumps were a natural choice.

Due to their reputation in the East Midlands Region, Trusted Energy Solutions, a NIBE VIP installer, based in Newark, was contracted to provide a solution to the extension’s heating and hot water requirements. Trusted Energy Solutions specified, designed and installed six F2040-16kW air source heat pumps (F2040) with a combined output of 96kW. The six air source heat pumps were installed on a reinforced flat roof, which meant they did not interfere with the aesthetics or access to the building.

NIBE F2040 is an intelligent and compact inverter-controlled air source heat pump. NIBE F2040 provides optimum savings since the heat pump automatically adapts to a building’s heating requirements all year round. The heat pump works down to an outdoor temperature of –20°C and at the same time supplies up to 58°C in supply line temperature.

The new care home building was also fitted with underfloor heating and an MVHR (Mechanical Ventilation Heat Recovery) system, all installed by Trusted Energy Solutions, as well as the general plumbing and fitting of the sanitaryware in order to offer a full turn-key solution.

Results

Trusted Energy Solutions was involved in the project from the early stages of its design, so the installation and commissioning of the heat pump ran very smoothly. The Seasonal Performance Factor for the heat pump is 376%, which means it delivers an excellent level of heat output to electricity input. In addition, My Care was able to take advantage of the Commercial RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) which provides financial support for renewable heat technologies for 20 years.

Dan Wilson, Business Development Manager for Trusted Energy Solutions, said: “The challenge on this project was to ensure that we had sufficient capacity to supply hot water to all the bathrooms in the extension whilst simultaneously creating a comfortable climate for the residents. The project ran swiftly and smoothly as a result of us being involved right from the start – this allowed us to pre-empt any possible issues from the get-go.”

Testimonial

A senior staff member from Normanton Lodge said: “We’re really pleased with the NIBE heat pumps installed at our care home extension. The residents have commented how comfortable the building is and how they also enjoy the benefits of having underfloor heating. It is great to have an energy source that we can leave on all day and is affordable to run, as well as being comfortable for our residents.”
