Common questions and answers about exhaust air heat pumps

How does an exhaust air heat pump work?

Slightly simplified, an exhaust air heat pump works like this:

The heat pump's fan sucks ventilation air out of all the wet spaces in your house, a weak negative pressure is formed which means that air from other rooms also finds its way to the wet spaces. Fresh outside air is drawn in through the vents on the outer walls and in this way all rooms in the house are ventilated.

The heated room air is led to the heat pump where the energy in the air is recovered and in this way the exhaust air heat pump can supply the entire house with hot water and heat.

New building regulations in the 80s

The modern construction technology with denser and more efficient houses led to new building regulations in the 80s with requirements for controlled ventilation and increased energy efficiency. The purpose was to ensure the well-being of both the houses and the people.

The technology involves first ventilating the house and then returning the thermal energy of the ventilation air to heat the hot water and the heating system. An exhaust air heat pump thus reuses energy from old used ventilation air. According to building requirements, your indoor air must be replaced every two hours.

Why choose an exhaust air heat pump?

The exhaust air heat pump reuses the energy from the indoor air and uses it for heating, hot water and ventilation. It suits you who want an affordable solution for a house built in 1982 or later and up to approx. 200 square meters.

In the wake of modern building technology came new building regulations with requirements for controlled ventilation and increased energy efficiency. The purpose of the rules was to ensure the well-being of both the houses and the people. Since then, the exhaust air heat pump has been an affordable solution - and still is - even when replacing.

It is the most common solution for newer houses and a solution that takes up little space.

When is it time to change to a new exhaust air heat pump?

In general, it is usually said that it is profitable to repair even if the heat pump is at least 16 years old. After that, you usually replace it if you suffer an expensive repair.

Replacing the compressor is normally done after about half the service life, i.e. about 8-12 years, so it can be good to have a little extra control over the compressor.

The most common way that you usually discover that something has broken is that you get rid of the hot water when winter turns into spring, then changing the location and continuing with the electric cartridge will of course be very expensive in the long run.
